How to Pick Up and Hold Baby

Cradle Hold:

This is one of the most popular (and natural) ways to hold a baby, and works especially well when you're feeding your child. Place the baby's head in the crook of your arm, and your other arm around the baby or underneath him.

Football Hold:

The baby lies flat on your forearm, while you hold her head with your hand for support.

Shoulder Hold:

Here, Baby's head rests against your shoulder. You'll use one arm to hold the lower back and bottom and your other arm to stabilize her head.

Lap Hold:

Lie on your back, facing up, with your legs propped up. Place the baby on top of your lap, with his head resting on your knees and his feet on your stomach. This works best for playtime with your little one. Don't forget to use both hands to support Baby's head and keep it from falling to one side or the other.

Belly Hold:

Perfect for gassy babies, this hold has Baby lying chest down over one of your forearms or on your lap. Use your other arm to hold them securely. This is also a great burping position!

Hip hold:

This works best after Baby has some head and neck control. You'll probably find your little one loves this hold because it allows her to see everything that's going on around her. Simply rest Baby on one of your hip bones facing outward and wrap the same side arm around her waist.

Sling Hold:

When you need both hands, place Baby securely into a sling, where he can lie in a variety of positions.
