#2013alive: Next Week, We\'re Getting to Work

After all the positive change weÂ’ve created, weÂ’re turning our focus to promoting a healthy work life in September.

This week, we got political by taking a stand for an issue in our community that we felt passionate about. Editor Colleen recounted boldly marching into her townhouse complex meeting to save her family’s threatened Japanese Maple tree, Editor Leah touted the power of the online petition, and Senior Editor Sandi shared her ongoing plight to protect a much-used recreational waterway in Delta from urban development. Who knew us editors were such an activist bunch? I myself have been known to write impassioned emails to professors if I feel that I deserve a higher paper grade, but I’m not sure if that really counts.

Moving into September, we’re taking all of the take-a-stand, fight-for-your-rights energy we’ve built up and putting it toward another important area of our lives—work!

From Monday to Friday, we spend nearly half of our waking time at our jobs. That’s a pretty large chunk of time—if your job isn’t leaving you feeling accomplished and satisfied, it may be time to make a change. Whether you create balance, review your work goals, freshen up your resume, or upgrade your professional skills through a course or seminar, there are plenty of ways to keep a career path from stagnating.

For Week 1 of September, our focus will be on promoting a healthy work-life balance. This weekend, take a moment to reflect on how your job affects you. Do you tend to bring your work home with you? Do you find yourself putting in a ton of overtime hours, or constantly checking your email when out of the office? Are you distracted while spending time with family and friends? If so, it may be time for a balance overhaul—stay tuned for next week’s tips on how to keep work life and real life in harmony.

How do you maintain work-life balance? Send us a Tweet using the #2013alive hashtag to let us know! You can also follow us on Twitterand Facebook, and follow our blog posts to see how we’re doing with our goals.
